Coral reefs live in salt water. They best grow in shallow, sunny, clear water. reefs rarely grow deeper than 40m. The best salinity levels for coral reefs are between 34-37 parts per 1,000. The best salinity and temperature can be found mostly in the tropics. If the temperature of the water falls below 18 degrees Celsius or above 32 degrees Celsius the reef can be destroyed. However, Scientist estimate that human factors like Global warming will Destroy more then 30% of the existing reefs in the next 30 years.
There are generally three different types of reefs. The first is called the fringing reef. This is the most common type of reef. It is attached to the mainland or continental island. The inner reef flat is most likely covered with sand and mud. The central reef flat is most likely dominated by plants. Corals can be found though on the outer edge of the reef.
A second type of reef is called atoll. This reef is in a ring shape that surrounds a lagoon. Atolls grow with underwater volcanoes, know as seamounts.
The barrier reef is known as the third type of reef. Barrier reefs are detached platforms from the adjacent land by a bay or lagoon.
